Boost for children’s outdoor activity centre following installation by Fusion Marine of new pontoon

A new access pontoon for a schools’ outdoor centre on the West coast of Scotland has provided a major boost to the range of activity courses on offer, particularly for disabled children.

The new pontoon for North Lanarkshire Council’s Kilbowie Residential Outdoor Centre near Oban, Argyll, enables convenient and easy access for school children to participate in a range of sea-going activities involving kayaks, canoes, sail and small power boats.

Supplied by Barcaldine-based Fusion Marine Ltd, the 31m pontoon, which is constructed from tough recycled plastic and polyethylene, slopes down the shore at Kilbowie on the Sound of Kerrera, providing access to the sea at all states of the tide.

Operated by North Lanarkshire Council’s Learning and Leisure Services, the centre caters for more than 3,500 primary seven pupils every year from schools throughout the region, including disabled children. Kilbowie aims to provide high quality, adventurous activities in a superb environment.

Drhue Forbes, the principal at Kilbowie, says he is delighted with the pontoon as it has boosted the efficiency of the centre and enhances the children’s enjoyment of the wide range of activities available.

He said: “This new pontoon has greatly improved access to the sea and is particularly useful when helping disabled kids. Even within the first fortnight of its installation, there were two instances where it proved invaluable in ensuring that wheelchair bound children were able to gain easy access to a boat.

“We were very pleased with the service provided by Fusion Marine in supplying the pontoon and they were very flexible in ensuring that it was installed to our exact requirements.”

Stephen Divers, managing director of Fusion Marine, said: “We are delighted that this versatile pontoon is proving so useful in enhancing the outdoors experience for the children at Kilbowie.
“The flexible nature of our individually designed pontoon range enables them to be sited on shelving beaches and other coastal locations, providing a suitable freeboard and access at all states of the tide.”

Fusion Marine has supplied pontoons to a wide range of organisations and businesses looking for cost-effective coastal access. They are ideal for coastal hotels looking to attract leisure craft, as well as mooring associations and yacht clubs; community associations; country estates; angling and leisure boat operators, and fish farming operations.
