New pontoon for Holy Isle brings benefits to Interfaith Centre

The Interfaith Centre on Holy Isle by Lamlash, Arran, is benefiting from a new pontoon that enables vessel access at all states of the tide.

The 71m pontoon was supplied by Argyll-based Fusion Marine Ltd in a project installation managed by Wallace Stone LLP of Glasgow. The pontoon has been well received by the Buddhist monks who run the Interfaith Centre, ensuring easy access for the growing number of visitors to the Holy Isle.

The previous concrete jetty was in a state of disrepair and the Interfaith Centre was keen to find a cost-effective solution for its replacement. Due to the shallow shoreline, it was decided that the best option was a Fusion Marine pontoon, which are now widely used with a great success in a number of coastal and freshwater locations in Scotland. The pontoon is manufactured from durable and corrosion-free polyethylene and recycled plastic.

Anchored to the shore by a concrete bridgehead, the pontoon slopes down the foreshore into the sea and rises and falls with the tide, providing 24 hour access and a safe and convenient mooring platform for small craft.

Gordon Brown of Wallace Stone LLP, said: “The durable construction and ability to provide access at all states of the tide were a major advantage compared to a like for like replacement of the existing concrete jetty structure, which was prohibitively expensive.”

Iain Forbes of Fusion Marine said: “Our versatile and extremely tough all-plastic pontoons are now widely used and can radically transform the access potential of a coastal or freshwater site in a cost-effective way. The length and other specifications are tailored to individual customer requirements, and there is also the option for a hammerhead arrangement at the end to provide extra mooring capability.”
